Lesson 5, Unit 2, Choice 2: Preparing for the Savior's Second Coming

  1. Review Mark 13:5, 9, 23, 33, 35, 37 and identify the words take heed and watch in each verse. List at least three things from this chapter that believers could watch for in order to be prepared to meet the Lord.

Watch out for people who would try to deceive us (13:5)
Watch out for the fulfillment of prophecies that have been foretold (13:23)
Watch out for the second coming and pray (13:33)

  1. Explain in writing any other additional truths that are taught in the following references about how to prepare for the Second Coming of Jesus Christ.
    • Doctrine and Covenants 87:8 - “Wherefore, stand ye in holy places, and be not moved, until the day of the Lord come”
    • Joseph Smith—Matthew 1:32 - “And again shall the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, be fulfilled.”
    • Joseph Smith—Matthew 1:37 - “And whoso treasureth up my word, shall not be deceived”
    • Joseph Smith—Matthew 1:46–50 - “And what I say unto one, I say unto all men; watch” (1:46); “Blessed is that servant whom his lord, when he cometh, shall find so doing; and verily I say unto you, he shall make him ruler over all his goods.” (1:50)
    • Doctrine and Covenants 33:17 - “Wherefore, be faithful, praying always, having your lamps trimmed and burning, and oil with you, that you may be ready at the coming of the Bridegroom—”
    • Doctrine and Covenants 45:56–57 - “For they that are wise and have received the truth, and have taken the Holy Spirit for their guide, and have not been deceived—verily I say unto you, they shall not be hewn down and cast into the fire, but shall abide the day.”

To summarize the above verses, I would say that to prepare for the second coming, we are told to: stand in holy places, study the scriptures, watch for the signs of Christ’s coming, be faithful and pray always, and follow the promptings and guidance of the Holy Spirit.
