Lesson 4, Unit 1, Choice 1: "The Lord Appointed Other Seventy Also"

Luke 10:1–24. “The Lord Appointed Other Seventy Also”

  1. Review Luke 10:1–24. Based on these verses, write a summary of the Lord’s counsel and instructions He gave the seventy.

The Lord sent the seventy into every city and place that he himself would have gone if he’d had the time in his ministry. He instructed them to pray for more labourers (or servants of God). He told them to not to take any money or provisions for themselves, but to rely on the hospitality of those they would minister to. He instructed them to eat and drink what they are given, heal the sick among those they visit, and teach them. If the seventy are not received into the homes of the people they visit but are turned away they are to go away in peace, knowing that those people will have to answer to God in the last day for turning away his servants. Christ gave unto the seventy the power to overcome the adversary and to cast out devils, and he blessed them with safety that they would come to no harm.
  2. Articles of Faith 1:6 states, “We believe in the same organization that existed in the Primitive Church.” Using the principles taught from Luke 10:1–2, 8–9, 17–20, write a paragraph that supports this Article of Faith.

I don’t know how I should get a paragraph out of comparing those two, but I can say that the Article of Faith means that our church is organized today in the same manner that Jesus organized his church while he was on the earth. He had twelve apostles, a first presidency (I think after he was crucified, right?), and from Luke 10:1 we know that there were “other seventy also” who were appointed, just like how in the church today we have quorums of seventies. I don’t know much about what the seventy do in the latter days, but I can assume because of Articles of Faith 1:6 that they do the same things that the seventies did in Jesus’s time: pray, minister, visit church members and eat in their homes, and cast out devils.
  3. Go to the Church’s scripture website and read the topic of “Seventy” in the Guide to the Scriptures. Describe in one or two sentences how the scriptures show the existence of this office in the priesthood.

Aside from in the Gospel of Luke the only other mentions of the Seventy that are listed are in Doctrine and Covenants, sections 107 and 124. They say that the seventy are to be traveling elders who preach the gospel and are special witnesses equal in authority to the Twelve apostles, who are first supposed to minister unto the Gentiles, and then the Jews. These different scripture references show the existence of this office in the priesthood.
